NYFW Diary: Bewitched (and bejewelled) at Kara Ross

Posted February 11th, 2011 | 10:36 am | By Sarah Casselman |

Feb11-nyfw-kara ross Kara Ross' fantastical jewels

Jewellery designer Kara Ross’ New York-based showroom is the kind of place a girl would like to take off her coat and stay a while. Which is exactly what I did in between today’s line-up of shows. Ross’s fall collection is her strongest to date?her showroom’s shelves are stocked with costume pieces (a diamond-shaped jet pendant necklace, countless art deco-inspired bejewelled bangles and chalcedony pyramid rings) and fine jewellery (think diamonds mixed with organic materials like the wood heart pendants).

Ross’ PR maven Carla (a girl who has clearly mastered the art of liquid liner application) told me that First Lady Michelle Obama is a huge fan of this jewellery line.  In fact, the wood used in some of the fine jewellery pieces is actually right from the White House property.  On my way out the door I fell in love with Ross’ collection of exotic clutch bags.  Such a fresh, modern take on this evening bag, and in my obsession du jour? STINGRAY!  And coloured stingray?  I’m still drooling.  With the Oscars fast approaching, these hot little bags would do well in the hands of red carpet rookies (and nominees) like Hailee Steinfeld and Jennifer Lawrence.  Kind of brings new meaning to “the envelope, please…”

Feb11 Rodarte Opening Ceremony Photography by Autumn de Wilde

The long-awaited collaboration between design darlings, Laura and Kate Mulleavy, and coolest place on earth, Opening Ceremony, is here! Well, online that is… The sisters channeled a similarly offbeat ‘70s inspiration as their spring 2011 collection into a selection of enviable separates for the label, at slightly lower prices than their own line. Featuring eyelet blazers, drip dyed cardigans, tapestry dresses and too many lace-up motifs to count, the collection screams baby, grandma and cool-girl all at the same time. You can view the collection online now, but if you’d like to shop the pieces in the flesh (or in the lace), they’ll be available exclusively in Canada at Holt Renfrew next month.

NYFW Diary: The so-called calm before the style storm

Posted February 10th, 2011 | 12:37 pm | By Sarah Casselman |

Feb11-NYFW-Day1 Left: An empty Lincoln Centre. Right: A special fashion week menu!

After one airport snafu, one OMG-this-isn’t-actually-happening Blackberry glitch and one heroic Olympic lift of my beyond-packed suitcase off the baggage claim conveyor belt, it’s official folks: New York fashion week, fall 2011 can begin.

Cue the majestic Lincoln Center, standing tall waiting to be filled with designers, models, editors, buyers, bloggers, wannabe bloggers and the odd stage-5 fashion week clinger (they’re hard to describe but instantly recognizable, trust).  Despite New York’s sub-zero temps, the city is heating up for the fashion flock’s arrival.  Even the local restos are cashing in on the imminent action, flashing sandwich boards with fashion plate prix fixe… coconut water, anyone?  First up is BCBG Max Azria (how fitting for Valentine’s Day weekend) designed by the ultimate fashion lovebirds ?Max and his wife (and creative director) Lubov. Celebs expected to be perched in the front row: Ashanti, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Katrina Bowden, Kelly Rowland and Maggie Rizer.

How will the week unfold?  Who will be the new darlings?  What will be the new hot spot?  What will be the juiciest gossip?  Stay tuned…

Giving back in style: Me to We Artisans

Posted February 11th, 2011 | 12:22 pm | By Laura Schober |

Feb11-Me-to-We Photography by Sabrina Rossi

When Free the Children co-founder, Roxanne Joyal, first moved to Kenya 10 years ago, the bold, intricate handiwork of the Maasai Mara community had her instantly transfixed. The vibrant jewellery of the community’s “mamas” transcended mere adornment and rather, was used for necessity ? from birth rituals to wedding ceremonies.
Vowing to share their stunning creations with the rest of the world, Joyal, who now splits her time between Kenya and Toronto, founded Me to We Artisans, a fair-trade program that allows the mamas to earn money by selling their pieces. Opening the first Me to We store in Toronto this past December, the artisanal works are not only culturally significant, but surefire graphic hits for spring (Versace, anyone?)

Proving that even a classicist can pull off these loud, tribal-inspired patterns. We put geometric style to the test on Jordan Porter, our fashion market editor and frequent collared-shirt and pearls wearer. The decorative Malaika wedding necklace ($60) pictured on Jordan features beaded pendants capped with cowry shells and small metallic discs, while the colourful beaded Maasai pattern on the Bahati luck snap bracelet ($40) is a symbol of good luck. Combined with her paired-back Alice + Olivia cardigan and slim Zara pants and Dolce Vita laceup booties, the overall look is chic yet totally unexpected.

The Me to We Toronto store is located at 223 Carlton Street (1-877-METOWE1). To shop the collection online, visit metowe.com/shop.

NYFW Diary: Lincoln Center’s Secret Service and a tonal palette at BCBG

Posted February 11th, 2011 | 10:28 am | By Sarah Casselman |

Feb11-nyfw-bcbg Photography by Peter Stigter

It’s only the first day of New York fashion week but they are everywhere.  At the front doors. Beside the washrooms. On the plastic covered runway before the lights dim. They are the men in black (and not because it’s fashionable). They are the Lincoln Center’s fashion week security squad. I spotted a cluster of these fine gents patrolling the runway pre-BCBG Max Azria this morning. I don’t envy them. Day in and day out they deal with pre-and post-show stampedes, Super Bowl-worthy pushing, seat stealers and the industry’s best (and worst) liars (“I have to get backstage to see the designer, I’m his cousin/sister/former babysitter”). If you ever have the opportunity to meet one, do so. Bet you a pair of front row seats at the show of your choice you can’t make one smile.

Designer Max Azria and his gorgeous wife (and creative director) Lubov wereall smiles following their fall 2011 runway show. The collection’s sophisticated and mostly neutral palette (white, grey, mocha, tan, taupe) balanced the designers’ crisp, clean lines. Pops of navy and blood orange added depth, while sculptural accessories in luxurious textures articulated a modern elegance. Come fall, every BCBG girl will want Azria’s cognac coat with faux fur collar and black suede knee high boots. Bring on the chill.

Acne Health Skin Care - Why it Should Include Plant Based Oils

I just finished reading an article posted on what appears to be a very extensive anti acne health skin care website, and felt that I had to say something about it. What the article is saying is that you should avoid the use of all natural products which contain oils in them. They are stating that it is the oil in these products that is causing the acne that many people suffer to occur.

The fact is that you need plant based oils and waxes in your skin care products in order to maintain skin health. These oils provide the skin with the vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids that your skin needs, as well as supply healing antioxidants. These antioxidants are absolutely vital in reversing the lines and wrinkles in the skin that are caused by oxidative damage through free radical activity.

One of the root causes of acne is the blockages formed at the base of your follicles by natural oils in the skin and dead keratin protein cells. This is mostly caused by the overproduction of sebum by the sebaceous glands in the skin, which can easily be regulated by plant derived oils and extracts. I believe this anti acne health skin care website is misleading its readers with their call for oil free products to eliminate acne.

The way that acne lesions are formed is that after the blockages are in place at the base of the follicle the propionibacterium acnes bacteria enter the picture. This largely commensal bacterium causes the buildup of inflammation at the site of the blockage, which causes the visible lesions known as acne to form. None of this has anything to do with plant derived oils.

The fact is that the author of this article on the anti acne health skin care website is basing her self-proclaimed ban on all oils in skin care formulas based on her experience with one oil cleansing method in particular. What she has failed to take into consideration is that the method she was using was flawed in that it did not feature an ingredient to regulate the moisture balance in her skin.

The two oils in the oil cleansing method that this woman used are both excellent moisturizers, but when these moisturizers were combined with high sebum production she ran into problems. Natural ingredients like Maracuja passion fruit extract and Jojoba oil control the amount of sebum being produced based on the overall moisture levels in the skin. They never allow your skin to become too oily, or too dry.

By following the advice laid out in this article on the anti acne health skin care website, you will miss out on the benefits that natural compounds like Shea butter, Phytessence Wakame kelp extract, and Capuacu butter have in reducing the inflammation that causes your acne lesions to form. The natural antibacterial compound active Manuka honey is exceptional at eliminating the harmful bacterium that causes the inflammation in your skin to form.

The bottom line, this anti acne health skin care website is dead wrong, when it comes to the connection between natural oils and acne.

Anti Aging Skin Care System - What Are the Ingredients and Steps of an Effective Skin Care System?

A complete anti aging skin care system includes a number of creams, gels and lotions, but a few lifestyle changes may be necessary, too. Here's what you need to do, if you want to look younger and better for the rest of your life.

The first step is to drink plenty of water. Why?

Many fine lines and wrinkles are due to dry skin, which is a symptom of chronic dehydration. The more you exercise, the more you need to drink. When you are ill, you need even more fluids. And, no matter what they claim, soft drinks are not "hydrating".

The research that they use to support the claim concluded that some people drink beverages other than water and are not suffering from severe dehydration. Researchers made no conclusions about whether or not soft drinks were healthy, only that some people choose to drink them.

Mild or chronic dehydration is common and the symptoms are often blamed on stress, fatigue, age or other issues. For a complete anti aging skin care system, you should drink about 8 ounces every hour or so, whether or not you are thirsty. If you drink 8 ounces and do not need to urinate within 20 minutes, then you are dehydrated.

If products in an anti aging skin care system contain alcohol, they will increase dryness. If they contain paraffin or paraffin wax, they may make your skin feel moister for a while, but they will eventually strip the natural oils and your skin will feel dryer than ever.

Many other ingredients can cause excessive dryness and irritation. DEA, MEA, TEA, mineral oil and petrolatum do not belong in any cosmetics, but many companies use them. Check the label, before you buy.

Get plenty of sleep and use a restorative night cream. These steps are indispensable. While you are sleeping, numerous processes are going on within your body. The most relevant is that cell damage is being repaired. If you do not get enough sleep, you will have dark circles around your eyes and over time, you will develop bags and wrinkles.

A restorative night cream should contain nourishing ingredients that increase the production of collagen and elastin, while blocking enzymatic reactions that reduce protein content. Only the best anti aging skin care system contains the right ingredients for this purpose. Most contain few active ingredients and are primarily purified water.

Limit your exposure to the sun and use an age defense day cream. Sunscreen is okay, but it does nothing to block UV-A rays which depletes your skins supply of COQ10, a vitamin like substance that plays an important role in skin cell production. The best choice for a day cream is one that replenishes COQ10 stores and repels UV light.

Eat right. Take your vitamins and use all natural products that contain no parabens, fragrances or other chemicals. If you stick with a good anti aging skin care system, you will look and feel better, forever.

I have tried different skin care and anti aging products and my research shows that the best skin care line should be safe to use, effective on your skin and contain the latest breakthrough natural ingredients, get more information at: http://www.best-skin-care-line.com

Skin Care - Lotion Vs Cream

Skin care awareness has led to a horde of skin care products in the market with the key audience being focused on women. Citing the widespread demands in the market for varied sets of skin care essentials, scientific research is eager to provide virtually any kind of cream or skin care lotion product for all-around ailments of the face and skin. Which one holds the prime stage for the consumers? This is still a matter of debate and needs a more thorough analysis and persistent evaluations. However there can be no definite conclusion to the heated debate as it becomes a matter of personal preference for incorporating any one of the products for your personal vanity bags. We are all aware that the greasier creams are thwarted when in competition with a non greasy (non viscous) or less greasy one.

The non viscous creams are composed of less oil and therefore are more beneficial for occasions which demand long hours of wearing facial make up. For this reason skin care creams are renowned more as moisturizers than as cleaners or toners. For toners the most lavish choice seems to be lotions; however there are creams which can also be good substitutes for toners. For cleansing, both lotions and skin care creams have somewhat equal voicing, but in the thick of the debate the audience seems to embrace lotions more. Moisturizing creams are known for keeping dry and rough skin vibrant and alive for a longer period of time. That's why some of the best brands of moisturizing creams come in the form of moisturizers. Although moisturizing creams have their relevance in their niche market and audience, there are other popular creams that are more advantageous when it comes to oily skin care.

These creams are composed of ingredients such as vitamin A and Sulphur which aids in reducing sebum production and optimizing the melanocytes of the epidermal layer with the external environment. For localized disorders involving the external application of medicine, creams are the best choice for its' cohesive strength to stick to a particular region for precisely longer durations when compared with lotions which are generally in liquid form. Although, lotions are best utilized with circumstances where medicinal washing is required for the same opposite reason that the cream was intended for a localized skin disorder.

The key aspect is not unknown to the manufactures as they have separated the two into their respective niche categories so that a more intelligent choice is finally made by the consumers. The recent innovations of epidermal care for wrinkles around the eyes and anti-aging suggest that creams are a much more obvious choice than that of lotions. What is of prime importance after all the debating is the fact that one should know how to answer questions like, "what do I use?" and "when to use it?" for a more dynamic result and self-oriented approach towards your skin toning or care needs.

Anti-Wrinkle Skin Care Products

Disappearing lines

It's obvious that wrinkles can appear anywhere on a person's face. Commonly, they appear around the mouth and eyes due to passage of time and sunlight among other factors. Collagen and important acids in your face dry up leaving you with wrinkles.

Since this is all basically unavoidable, creams to lessen the appearance of these wrinkles is much sought after. Luckily, there are many creams available to make these lines disappear.

Necessary Ingredients

One of the biggest reasons that wrinkles appear is because of the loss of collagen. Therefore, when choosing the best anti-wrinkle cream, you should look for ingredients that will help stimulate the body's natural production of collagen such as:

o Glucosamine Complex

o Vitamin C

o Collagen and Vyo Serum

Any product containing any of these ingredients will give results due to the rebuilding of the diminished collagen.

The More Natural the Better

Natural products will always work more efficiently as they are lighter and less greasy than those that are filled with man-made products. Any products that are using organic oils are going to be less harsh on your skin a whole. These ingredients are more rich in vitamins and can be easily absorbed by the skin. Any natural ingredient will work better as an antioxidant which targets the main problem of wrinkle appearance.

Choosing the Perfect Skin Care Products

When looking for a cream that is best your specific skin type, there are a few things you want to make sure the product has. Some main ones to be aware of are:

o Collagen production enhancing ingredients

o Natural products

o Ingredients that will work with your skin's specific pH levels

o Ingredients that hydrate the skin

Some products that are known to have all of these are, "Athena 7 Minute Lift", "Hydroderm" and "Dermitage". It's important to read all of the ingredients contained within the product and take in to consideration certain things that may not work with your individual skin type When used together, these ingredients will have a fast, noticeable effect that lasts.
